– Rider-Waite Tarot was named one of the Top Ten Tarot Decks of All Time by Aeclectic Tarot. In 1909, artist Pamela Coleman Smith, under the direction of Arthur Edward Waite, created an innovative 78-card tarot deck that would come to be recognized as revolutionary.

Authur Edward Waite, the revered 19th- and 20th-century occultist and metaphysical scholar, had insight enough to create a tarot deck that peers into the human spirit with both subtlety and directness. The Rider Tarot Deck is the only original, authorized Waite deck since his death in 1942, and contains all 78 major and lesser arcana cards.

Tarot Deck [13]

This 78-card deck includes 56 tarot cards known as the Minor Arcana and 22 tarot cards known as the Major Arcana. Decks that follow the exact RWS system are known as ‘Rider Waite clones’—this means that the imagery and meaning would mirror the RWS system of Tarot. Many modern Tarot decks are inspired by the popular Rider Waite Smith Tarot Deck, first published in 1909 by spiritual seeker A.E.

How tarot works—at the root of it, a deck works by posing a question or asking for insight, shuffling the cards, and then pulling a card or cards which represent the answers. So, if you learn this system, you will know the imagery contained in numerous modern Tarot decks.

The iterations of RWS are my fave decks for the rich detail of imagery and symbolism, and this one is no exception. The Giant Rider Waite Deck also encourages tarot readers to focus and concentrate on a single card at a time, fully exploring its meanings.Rider-Waite Tarot was named one of the Top Ten Tarot Decks of All Time by Aeclectic Tarot.See also: Rider-Waite Tarot Deck, Rider-Waite Tarot — Premier Edition, Pocket Rider-Waite Tarot, Miniature Rider-Waite Tarot, Spanish Rider-Waite Tarot, French Rider-Waite Tarot, 6-unit Rider-Waite Gravity Feed Display, Original Rider-Waite Tarot Set, Tarot Total Rider-Waite Deck/Book Set, The Golden Rider Tarot, Albano-Waite Tarot Deck, and Radiant Rider-Waite Tarot. The Giant Rider-Waite Deck is particularly helpful for beginners as they can readily observe all the details and connect deeply with the enlarged tarot imagery.

(Sometimes negative perceptions can negatively affect Tarot Readings).I have avoided buying Rider-Waite Decks for that reason. As a collector I am glad that I invested in this deck. Most of my Tarot Decks are reprinted from older decks.

Pamela Colman Smith: The Artist Behind the Tarot [16]

The resulting collection of 78 cards was published by Rider and Sons, and sold for a whopping six shillings as the first mass market Tarot deck. “Who Was Pamela Colman Smith? The ‘Mystic’ Woman behind the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck – The Lily.” Https://Www.thelily.com, The Lily, 26 July 2018, www.thelily.com/who-was-pamela-colman-smith-the-mystic-woman-behind-the-rider-waite-tarot-deck/.Ramgopal, Lakshmi. Up until this point, throughout the history of Tarot, decks primarily had illustrations only on the Major Arcana, and sometimes the court cards.

Rather than just showing a group of cups, coins, wands or swords, Smith worked human beings into the mix and created a rich tapestry of occult symbolism that set the gold standard for modern Tarot decks. Around 1909, Waite commissioned Smith to do the artwork for a new Tarot deck he was interested in creating.

Review: Radiant Wise Spirit Tarot [17]

With the exception of the borderless edition of the Smith-Waite Centennial Tarot, it’s really difficult to find a borderless Rider Waite Smith deck that is widely available. Apart from my copy of the Tattoo Tarot, all my decks are RWS-based (albeit two only loosely), and while I love the RWS symbolism/system/interpretations I really don’t like the original deck. I did eventually come across one of these decks in a shop and seriously contemplated buying it, but passed at that time rationalizing that I already had a perfectly useful RWS that I was more than happy with for all other purposes.

The Universal Waite is a very attractive deck, but it also keeps all the symbolism and hints and so on that the original RWS has, without looking manky or having the very thick black outlining. By that time, loads of people were buying the PCS RWS specifically for its moody coloring and were quite upset by receiving the third deck.

The Deck of Cards That Made Tarot A Global Phenomenon [19]

In 1971 he began to sell a Marseilles-style tarot deck, and wrote a second, more detailed book, Tarot Classic. It was, then, through their association with one another that Waite came to commission Smith to create 78 original drawings for the new tarot deck, the first one in English, which he wished to create. The most famous and popular tarot deck in the world, the first ever printed in English, the Rider-Waite tarot is a product of the intuitive thoughtfulness of an American-born occult scholar in late 19th century London, a British-born creative visual genius who studied art in New York City and lived in Jamaica, and a businessman whose first book was about coal mining techniques who happened upon a set of tarot cards at a toy fair in the late 1960s.

Without the Major Arcana, the cards of Tarot are roughly aligned with a standard playing card deck, which has its roots in France a few hundred years earlier. In 1908 the British Museum acquired black and white photographs of a full deck of tarot cards now known as the Sola-Busca deck.

Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) and Thoth Comparison with Spirit Keeper’s Tarot [20]

As for the full 78-card deck that you see here and a longer companion guidebook along with the children’s coloring book will be available for purchase later on as an actual physical copy tarot deck delivered to your front door. I shared why in an earlier post, here, “Drawing My Own Tarot Deck: Ruminations on the Court Cards.” To do that, I’m using The Original Design Tarot Deck published by Siren Imports for the RWS and the Thoth Tarot Deck published by U.S.

Every deck creator loves their own tarot deck (or… er… should… right? I mean, one would think…) so none of this is relevant at all. You could even argue that both the RWS and the Thoth tarot decks are the product of spell-crafting, born from fertile pools of knowledge and magical experience.

The Fool (tarot card) [21]

As such, most tarot decks originally made for game playing do not assign a number to the Fool indicating its rank in the suit of trumps; it has none. However, in decks designed for playing traditional tarot card games, it is typically unnumbered, as it is not one of the 21 trump cards and instead serves a unique purpose by itself. In the earliest tarot decks, the Fool is usually depicted as a beggar or a vagabond.

In the Rider–Waite Tarot deck, he is also portrayed as having with him a small dog. Since the 1930s, Tarot Nouveau decks often use a black inverted mullet as the corner index for the Fool.[8][9] In almost all tarot games, the Fool is one of the most valuable cards.

Why I don’t like the RWS tarot deck… [22]

If you’ve just started looking into tarot, you’ve got yourself a deck and you were excited until you started using it and then went meh… get yourself a different deck. The knight of cups from the RWS deck however is riding in on his horse, presumably to woo the Princess and whisk her away. i was trying to look up why the RWS deck had such harsh meanings compared to other widely accepted meanings (the lovers reversed having an RWS meaning of failure/foolishness whereas other decks may say misalignment/imbalance…) and i always felt so detached from this deck that so many people recommended for beginners like myself… this was so insightful and honestly explains so much for me.

It is based on the RWS deck but has a bit more fluidity in it. I’ve been suspicious of RWS deck ever since I learned that it copied some images from the Sola Busca deck…

Rider Waite Smith tarot deck: which version? [25]

Following on from my previous post on what I consider to be the best tarot deck for beginners, I thought I’d give a comparison of the Rider Waite Smith (RWS) decks I have so those considering purchasing one can see the differences between them. the Universal Waite Tarot, recoloured by Mary Hanson-Roberts, which I bought as a set, comprising of the deck and a book; printed by US Game Systems

Here in Australia, at the time of writing this post, one can acquire the Rider Tarot deck shown second from right above, for around $20 at a store such as Big W. I’m fond of the Universal, with its softer recolouring (the artist that re-painted it is Mary Hanson-Roberts, who created her own beautiful deck, different from RWS but in the same tradition); I’m not a fan of the Radiant due to its larger borders and the artwork in general is not my cup of tea.

The Wonderland Tarot deck consists of illustrations based on Sir John Tenniel’s artwork in Alice’s Adventures and Through the Looking Glass. Smith’s vibrant drawings transformed the standard tarot deck and it still remains one of the best tarot decks in any collection. The Golden Tarot deck consists of imagery inspired by the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.

In keeping with the roots of Hoodoo, this powerfully illustrated tarot deck is organized along the lines of an extended family. A Tarot de Marseille deck is a must-have deck for any serious tarot collector or enthusiast.

A Review of the Radiant Rider-Waite Tarot [28]

I hang onto it because it’s a recommended deck — probably from those same tarot authorities you mention — and I thought it might come in handy if I ever want or need a RWS recolored alternative. Use it to get acclimated with the imagery of the RWS and then from there, explore to find the deck that best speaks to you. I have several decks: Thoth; Rider-Waite; Universal; Golden Universal Tarot (the newest); and Gaia.

Same! There’s something similar between tarot decks and cats: who can have just one? (Even though I haven’t adopted more cats, I can’t deny that inexplicable yearning to!) If you are a fan of the RWS, I would recommend this deck.

Original Rider Waite Tarot Deck by A. E. Waite [29]

The original and only authorised edition of the famous 78-card Tarot deck designed by Pamela Colman Smith under the direction of Arthur Edward Waite. A E Waite – also known as Arthur Edward Waite – was the designer and co-creator of the now famous Rider Waite Tarot deck. Pip-based Minors, on decks like the Tarot de Marseille, or IJJ Swiss show a geometric arrangement of markers, such as six cups, lined up in a uniform, oblong pattern.

The classic Rider Waite Tarot was the first tarot deck to fully illustrate all 78 cards, with detailed pictures on the minor arcana cards. Waite’s bibliography in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot – his deck’s companion book – features detailed notes on consulted texts, from a wide range of significant authors, including Lévi, Court de Gebelin, Etteilla, Papus, Vaillant, Paul Christian and MacGregor Mathers.
