As a deck to introduce one who has never interacted with the tarot before, Luna Sol artfully draws forth the beginner reader’s creativity, gently guides that reader to trust intuition, and guards that reader against the unease, anxiety, or aversion that those new to the tarot might tend to feel around the mystique and lore of the cards. Mike Medaglia is a comics illustrator with a Zen Buddhist background, along with being one of the co-founders of Liminal 11, the publisher of the Luna Sol Tarot. If you believe that the particular tarot deck a reader chooses to work the closest with reflects the character, aura, and essence of the reader, then the Luna Sol Tarot says to me that those who gravitate toward this deck are compassionate, loving, soulful, and forward-thinking, with values rooted in pluralism, inclusiveness, and diversity of both culture and beliefs.

(The companion guidebook that comes with the deck notes that Luna Sol is ordered in the tradition of the Tarot de Marseille.) Soft and uplifting, the Luna Sol Tarot by Mike Medaglia is easy to love with its fresh and inclusive perspective on the RWS tarot tradition. The first edition of the Luna Sol Tarot arrived in a standard tuck box that wasn’t much to work with.

I especially enjoy feeling the energy of the Luna Sol’s radiant Aces for each suit… Thankfully, after being able to see all the cards in the deck I’m over the moon that the Luna Sol didn’t continue with this trend [reference to the trend of placing Black and Brown people in the pentacles or “strong” cards].

There are several traditionally dark and serious cards that feel a little more mellow in the Luna Sol. The Luna Sol Tarot, designed by author and illustrator Mike Medaglia, is based around balance. I really enjoyed doing readings with the Luna Sol spread, which focuses on reflecting thoroughly on the present more than looking towards the future.

Older, traditional tarot decks tend to be very white, and so seeing a much wider range of skin colors represented in Luna Sol feels like a wonderful breath of fresh air. But while the symbolism is very similar, Luna Sol’s fresh art gives it a very different feel.

Looking Through The Luna Sol Tarot ^[16]

The backs of the Luna Sol Tarot cards are a pale yellow featuring clouds, birds and sunlight against navy blue featuring stars and flowers, and the moonlight. Liminal 11 recently sent me a copy of the second edition of the Luna Sol Tarot which I have spent the past week or so working with and already, I am head over heels with this divine deck. The colours featured within this deck are of a pale, pastel palette and the continuing theme of the moon vs the sun (aka Luna Sol) is apparent throughout due to the yellow and navy tones alongside regular use of ying-yang symbology.

Having spent the past week using and reading the Luna Sol Tarot, I cannot recommend this deck enough as not only is it fabulous to work with and to read from, but it is such high quality and with the mini hardback guidebook and beautiful presentation box, it is the ideal gift for any level of tarot reader, it is also really fairly priced! The second edition of the Luna Sol Tarot is accompanied by a dinky, cute, sixty-page, colour-printed, hardback guidebook which includes a dedication page, a contents page, a foreword, an introduction, a quick guide to the major arcana, a single page spread upon each of the major arcana cards identifying their meaning, a short paragraph upon each of the minor arcana cards, four example spreads, and a final note.
