Tarocco Siciliano [5]

The Minchiate deck had half of its knaves female while the Cary-Yale tarot set had three ranks of women per suit.[7] It is also the only surviving tarot deck to use the Portuguese variation of the Latin suits of cups, coins, swords, and clubs which died out in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is one of the three traditional Latin-suited tarot decks still used for games in Italy, the others being the more prevalent Tarocco Piemontese and the Tarocco Bolognese.

This was a feature found in the Portuguese pattern.[6] Since a Latin tarot deck also includes queens, this is the only traditional playing card deck to include two ranks of women to have survived into the present. The Tarocco Siciliano is a tarot deck found in Sicily and is used to play Sicilian tarocchi.

Deck of Italian Tarot Cards [10]

A richly illustrated deck of Italian Tarot cards, made in the 19th century. Tarot deck containing all twenty-two tarot picture cards and thirty-two of the fifty-six cards, divided into four suits, which are similar to those in an ordinary deck of playing cards.

The suits in the deck of Tarot cards correspond to the suits in a modern deck of playing cards, with one exception: the Knight is an extra card in the Tarot deck. Tarot is also used as a form of divination, and each card in the deck has its own meanings.

A Renaissance Riddle: The Sola Busca Tarot Deck (1491) [12]

The Latin motto TRAHOR FATIS (I am drawn by Fate) appears but four times in the Tarot masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, the Sola Busca deck, and yet it hangs unmistakably over the cards’ entire colorful procession of ancient Greek and Roman heroes.

Italian playing cards [16]

All Italian suited decks have three face cards per suit: the fante (Knave), cavallo (Knight), and re (King), unless it is a tarocchi deck in which case a donna or regina (Queen) is inserted between the cavallo and re.

The Italian Roots of Tarot Cards [19]

What is common to all Tarot decks are beautifully illustrated cards full of symbolism that has evolved over time. The symbolism in the early decks reflect the heraldry of Italian noble families, as well as Italian art and architecture.

In 1944, an occultist named Aleister Crowley published “The Book of Thoth: A Short Essay on the Tarot of the Egyptians.” However, the deck based on his ideas wasn’t published until 1969, which coincided with the surge of interest in the occult linked to the New Age culture of the 1970s.

Wikipedia [20]

The German states used to produce a variety of 78-card tarot packs, originally using Italian suits, but later switching to French suited cards; some were imported to France. The terms “Major Arcana” and “Minor Arcana” were first used by Jean-Baptiste Pitois (also known as Paul Christian) and are never used in relation to tarot card games, which operate by a distinct set of rules.[32] Some decks exist primarily as artwork, and such art decks sometimes contain only the 22 Major Arcana. From their Italian roots, tarot playing cards spread to most of Europe evolving into a family of games that includes German Grosstarok and modern games such as French Tarot and Austrian Königrufen.

Etteilla was the first to produce a bespoke tarot deck specifically designed for occult purposes around 1789. These suits are still used in traditional Italian, Spanish and Portuguese playing card decks, and are also used in modern (occult) tarot divination cards that first appeared in the late 18th century.[14]

Lo Scarabeo – Tarot Thrones [22]

I don’t know about you, but I’m increasingly drawn to antique Tarot decks and this Ancient Italian Tarot from Lo Scarabeo is currently one of my favourites. As far as traditions go, this deck is a Marseilles-based deck (unillustrated pips, Justice VIII/Strength XI) with Majors and Court titles in Italian only. What do you think of the Ancient Italian Tarot families? What’s your favourite Marseilles-type deck?

Take a good look at the Pages in the Ancient Italian – they’re all considerably older than many modern decks portray them! So, what conclusions can I draw about the Courts of the Ancient Italian Tarot?

but no, some of the clubs have ribbons, too 😳 Can anyone help me, where is the logic in this 😥 How do I know it’s a 3 of clubs without looking to see what the 3 of swords looks like? ETA; I already went all the way through this thread on AT and while it discusses a lot of different old Italian decks, there’s not much actual info on the Ancient Italian Tarot.

Deck of the day: Ancient Italian Tarot [26]

I think this deck is kind of a reprint (that’s not actually the word for it, but I forget what it is) of an Italian deck from 1880, which is very similar to the Tarocco Soprafino, from 1835.
