BOHEMIANESS: Tarot Deck Review: Ghetto Tarot [4]

Shortly after I did this reading, I turned to the LWB for the first time and read on the back cover: “…the Ghetto Tarot will guide you in changing your perception, turning negativity in your life into positivity while discovering the power of your own thoughts.” !!!!! What incredible synchronicity! So right away, I had a connection with the energy of this deck.

‘The Ghetto Tarot’: Haitian artists transform classic tarot deck into stunning real life scenes [5]

Welcome to the Ghetto Tarot, a project from award-winning documentary photographer Alice Smeets and a group of Haitian artists known as Atis Rezistans. The idea was to take the classic Rider-Waite tarot deck of 78 cards and create a photographic version of each card using settings and objects in the vibrant ghetto of Haiti.

The Ghetto Tarot has been fully funded on indiegogo, and you can place an order for a full deck at the price of 32 euros (about $36).

Just as the very real citizens of Haiti have to deal with uncollected garbage and clothes worn well past the point of being new, so do the denizens of The Ghetto Tarot.

The scenes are inspired by the Rider Waite Tarot Deck, designed in 1919, and were recreated with a group of Haitian artists, the Atis Rezistans collective, in the ghettos of Haiti. Just as black people have been able to find wisdom in the all-white Rider-Waite-Smith and other all-white decks, white seekers will find all they look for in tarot in the Ghetto Tarot deck.
