Basics of Tarot Reading: A Tutorial [3]

The deck is ready for drawing, hooray! This is where things get really taroty. That card will be the first to be selected in the drawing sequence. Sometimes it takes me days to find out what a card really meant! Sometimes, weeks or months! Be open and receptive to how the tarot plays out in life.

Before I even start the process of handling the cards in order shuffle them, cut and draw, I normally like to have the question ready for tarot reading. As part of the demonstration, I will use one of the most common spreads, a 3-card draw that I’ll call the Past, Present & Future Spread.

This Jewish artist’s tarot card deck is inspired by Torah and ecology [4]

During a tarot reading, cards with evocative images are drawn from a deck and interpreted through a particular lens. Some draw on Kabbalah in their readings; other modern Jewish artists have also blended tarot with Jewish mysticism.

Rosen started each design by pulling a card from her copy of the Rider-Waite deck, the most well-known tarot deck (first published in 1909, it is famous for its esoteric imagery and is what most people think of when they think of tarot cards). “The connection between tarot and Torah, which the title references, is mysterious but very much present within the traditional archetypes of the cards,” she said.

Drawing My Own Tarot Deck: Rumination Notes Aces to Threes [5]

14 thoughts on “Drawing My Own Tarot Deck: Rumination Notes Aces to Threes” Pingback: Drawing My Own Tarot Deck: Rumination Notes Fours to Aces – benebell wen Over three years ago, I contributed one card to a collaborative tarot deck, Tarot Pink, and it was the Two of Wands.

Now that I think about it, reflecting back on using colored pencil for the Tarot Pink card, I’m wondering whether that might be the option to go with as opposed to markers. I’ve chosen to do the courts last because they’re the most important cards in this specific deck (I’m not talking about tarot in general; I’m only talking about how I’ve chosen to program this specific set of cards for myself).

I shared all my digital files for the Major Arcana from the tarot deck I’m currently drawing at the end of June, 2018 here: Spirit Keeper’s Tarot (Majors Only). The downside to not concerning myself with industry publishing standards is the card size I went with is wonky and now to fit it into a printable tarot deck, you either cut off and lose details along the four edges of each card image or you’ll have to go with really thick, chunky borders.

I like the black and white drawings as it is; the B&W outlines invite us to fill out the card ourselves, either physically or metaphysically. Pingback: Drawing My Own Tarot Deck: Rumination Notes Aces to Threes – benebell wen

How To Do A Daily Tarot Card Pull Reading For Yourself [7]

In this practice, people begin each day by pulling a single tarot card for themselves and reflecting on the meaning. Old myths say that pulling your own cards and buying your own tarot deck brings bad luck — but many people now discount these myths, saying that these practices can be beneficial to yourself and to others.

To do a daily tarot card pull, you’ll first need to set aside some time each morning for the ritual.

A Beginner’s Guide to Tarot Cards [10]

Though tarot cards have taken on a mystical meaning in the cultural imagination, they were originally intended as more of a parlor game. These meanings can come into play where cards represent people and their zodiac signs, but since we’re beginners here, the meanings you’ll most often draw from are the functional definitions. Another common use for tarot cards is a daily card reading, wherein a single card is pulled from the top of the shuffled deck and used as a reminder or a guideline for the day ahead.

The last few years have seen a resurging interest in all things witchy, tarot cards among them. There are lots of ways to read tarot cards, and often the directions that come with your cards will include pictures of the most popular spreads.

The Deck of Cards That Made Tarot A Global Phenomenon [16]

Among them, he included the famous French playing card deck, the Tarot de Marseilles, which he connected to the Egyptian deities Isis and Thoth. Without the Major Arcana, the cards of Tarot are roughly aligned with a standard playing card deck, which has its roots in France a few hundred years earlier. The funny thing is that those images don’t hail from some ancient text but from one particular deck of cards, a relatively recent one in the life of this medieval form of entertainment: The Rider (or Rider-Waite-Smith) Tarot.

We have never given up,” he goes on, and because of Kaplan and his company, tarot cards are widely available and cheap. The long one begins in 15th century Europe, where the 78 card deck—four suits (Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles) of 10 “pip”cards running from Ace to ten, each with an additional four “face”cards (King, Queen, Knight, and Jack) plus 21 Trump cards known as the Major Arcana, plus the Fool—form the traditional tarot deck.

Dive into anything [17]

I’m drawing my own tarot deck as a creative outlet – just finished the Major Arcana! I’ve attempted to do this before, but back then I was making it super hard on myself – I was re-drawing the cards based on my interpretation, using watercolor and doing two of each so I had a copy for a friend.

Thanks! This means a lot, because the one judgement I find myself making a lot is that my drawings don’t feel mature enough tonally to work with tarot, so I appreciate that you think it works.
